Mary and Jane are a couple from New York who visited Punta Cana in 2025. Their travel itinerary was packed with multiple stops because they wanted to explore as much of the destination as possible. Before arriving, they asked us a very common question:
What is the best way to get around Punta Cana?
Our main recommendation was clear: if they wanted privacy, zero stress, comfort, and flexibility, the best option was a private transfer service. It’s essentially like having a private driver during your stay.
All they needed to do was plan ahead with a private transfer company, share where they wanted to go, at what time, and for how long. The company would handle everything else, allowing them to relax and fully enjoy their vacation.
Even so, we also explained other transportation options so they could compare and decide what worked best for them.
Getting Around Punta Cana on Foot
Walking is not the option we recommend the most. While some places may seem close, it’s no secret that walking long distances is not always the safest option in many Latin American destinations.
Although Punta Cana is one of the safest areas in the Dominican Republic, walking is still not ideal for tourists unfamiliar with the area. If you decide to try it, use apps like Google Maps or Waze to check distances and surroundings before heading out.
Renting a Car in Punta Cana
Renting a car can be a good option if you want total independence and plan to explore beyond your resort. However, there are important things to consider:
There are rental scams, so you must choose a reputable company.
Driving can be chaotic if you’re not used to local traffic.
You won’t have the comfort, relaxation, or personalized service that comes with a private or VIP transfer.
Taking a Taxi in Punta Cana
If you didn’t plan transportation in advance and need to move around once you’re already there, taxis are a viable option.
That said, you should:
Always ask for the price before getting in.
Have an idea of the distance and expected cost.
Be aware that prices are often higher for tourists.
Using the Bus in Punta Cana
This is one of the cheapest transportation options, costing around USD $8, but it’s not recommended for tourists.
Buses usually drop you off at general locations, not specific destinations. You may end up walking long distances, which can be confusing and uncomfortable if you’re unfamiliar with the area.
Motoconcho (Motorcycle Taxi)
Motoconchos are very common among locals and cost between USD $2 to $4 per ride.
This option is only recommended if:
You’re traveling solo
You enjoy adventurous experiences
You’re comfortable with higher risk
It’s not ideal for families, groups, or travelers with luggage.
So, What’s the Best Way to Get Around Punta Cana?
By now, the answer is probably clear.
If you’re traveling with family, friends, or simply want to enjoy your vacation without stress, a private transfer is the best option. You get comfort, punctuality, safety, and the feeling of being treated like royalty—without paying luxury prices.
