Tips for a smoother day

Bring reef-safe sunscreen

You'll be in the water for several hours. The natural pool and Saona Island beach are exposed to full sun. Reef-safe or mineral sunscreen protects both you and the marine ecosystem. Regular chemical sunscreen may be restricted in the natural pool area.

Pack a waterproof phone case or camera

The natural pool — with starfish in crystal-clear shallow water — is the most photographed moment of the entire tour. A waterproof case means you don't have to choose between experiencing it and capturing it.

Wear your swimsuit under your clothes

You'll be in and out of the water all day — natural pool, snorkeling, and the island beach. Wearing your swimsuit from the start means no changing rooms, no delays, just more time in the water.

Bring $20–30 USD cash

Souvenirs, locker rental, and personal extras at the island are not included. The island has local vendors and small shops. Card payment is not available on the island — cash only.

Leave valuables at the hotel

You'll be on boats and beaches all day. The tour operator recommends leaving passports, expensive jewelry, and non-waterproof electronics at your hotel. A waterproof bag or case is your best travel companion today.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Saona Island tour from Punta Cana worth it?
Yes — the Saona Island tour from Punta Cana is consistently rated the most memorable day trip in the Dominican Republic. The experience combines three things that are hard to find together: a natural pool in the middle of the Caribbean Sea where starfish live in waist-deep water, one of the longest white-sand beaches in the DR with turquoise water you can actually see the bottom of, and a catamaran party boat on the way back with Caribbean music and open bar. The honest version: this is a full-day commitment — approximately 10 hours door to door from your hotel. The beach is genuinely spectacular and the natural pool is unlike anything most travelers have seen. Visitors who book it consistently say they wish they'd done it on day one, not their last day. If you want relaxation, ocean, culture, and a festive afternoon all in one day — this is the tour for Punta Cana.
What is the natural pool at Saona Island?
The natural pool near Saona Island — known as Las Piscinas Naturales — is a shallow sandbar that rises from the middle of the Caribbean Sea, located approximately halfway between Bayahibe and Saona Island. The water is typically waist to chest deep, crystal clear, and warm. Dozens of starfish live on the sandy bottom in their natural habitat — you can walk among them and hold them gently under the guidance of your guide. The stop lasts approximately 30–45 minutes. It is the single most photographed moment of the entire Saona Island excursion and is consistently described as a bucket-list experience by travelers visiting Punta Cana. Note: starfish must be handled gently and returned to the water. Your guide demonstrates the correct technique on arrival.
Do you need to know how to swim for the Saona Island tour?
No swimming experience is required for the Saona Island tour. The natural pool is a shallow sandbar — most adults stand comfortably with water at waist to chest height. Life jackets are provided on all boats and available in the water for anyone who prefers them. Saona Island's beach (Playa Abanico) has calm, warm, shallow Caribbean water — safe and accessible for non-swimmers of all ages. The snorkeling stop is optional. Equipment is included but non-swimmers can stay on the boat or wade in the shallow water without participating in the snorkeling section. The full experience is enjoyable for non-swimmers. You will not miss the most important moments — the natural pool and the beach — by not swimming.
Is the Saona Island tour good for families and children?
Yes — the Saona Island tour is one of the most family-friendly excursions available from Punta Cana. Children ages 2–12 participate at a reduced rate. Infants under 2 travel free. The natural pool is especially memorable for children — standing in open Caribbean water surrounded by live starfish is the kind of moment kids remember for years. The water is shallow, calm, and warm. Life jackets are available for all ages. The catamaran return is festive — Caribbean music and dancing — which most children enjoy. It is lively but family-appropriate. One honest note: this is a full-day excursion of approximately 10 hours with boat rides and sun exposure. For children under 6, consider whether the length and pace are right for your family before booking.
Is there seaweed at Saona Island?
Saona Island is generally much less affected by sargassum than the beaches of Punta Cana and Bávaro. Thanks to its location and ocean currents, the island often enjoys clearer waters, even during the Caribbean sargassum season. While small amounts of seaweed can occasionally reach some areas, the Natural Pool and Saona's most popular beaches are typically far less impacted than many resort beaches. If weather or ocean conditions prevent the tour from operating safely, we offer flexible rescheduling or a full refund according to our cancellation policy.
Is snorkeling equipment included in the Saona Island tour?
Yes. Snorkeling equipment is included in the $75/person price. The snorkeling stop takes place in the crystal-clear Caribbean waters of Parque Nacional del Este, where you can explore coral reefs and tropical marine life. Your national certified guide accompanies the group throughout the snorkeling section. Non-swimmers or those who prefer not to snorkel can stay on the boat or enjoy the shallow water without equipment. Participation is optional. Life jackets are available for anyone who wants them during the snorkeling section.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of the tour?
The Saona Island tour operates normally in light rain. Brief tropical showers are common in the Dominican Republic and rarely affect the ocean or beach conditions at Saona Island. If Dominican maritime authorities determine that sea conditions are unsafe for departure — which is rare — we will contact you to offer: - Full rescheduling to another available date, OR - 95% refund — no questions asked You will be notified during the mandatory confirmation the evening before (between 6:00 and 7:00 PM) if any weather changes are anticipated. This policy applies only when the company cancels for safety reasons. Customer-initiated cancellations follow the standard cancellation policy above.
Is Saona Island crowded?
Saona Island is one of the Dominican Republic's most popular destinations, and some areas can be busy, especially during peak travel seasons. However, with a Private Saona Island tour, you'll enjoy a much more exclusive experience. Your group has its own private boat and a flexible itinerary, allowing you to avoid the busiest schedules and spend more time in the places you enjoy most. Instead of following a large group excursion, you'll have the freedom to relax, swim, snorkel, and explore Saona Island at your own pace while enjoying the beauty of the Caribbean. We recommend booking in advance, especially during high season, as private boats have limited availability.
What is the difference between Saona Island and Catalina Island?
Saona Island and Catalina Island are two different islands off the Dominican Republic coast, each offering a distinct experience. Saona Island is the larger island, part of the UNESCO-listed Parque Nacional del Este (Cotubanamá National Park), located approximately 2 hours from Punta Cana by road and speedboat. The tour experience focuses on the natural pool with starfish, Playa Abanico's white sand beach, a Dominican buffet lunch, open bar, and a catamaran party return. Best for travelers who want the full iconic Caribbean day with a festive atmosphere. Catalina Island is smaller, located closer to La Romana, and best known for its coral reef. The famous "Aquarium" snorkeling site near Catalina Island offers exceptional underwater visibility and marine life diversity. Best for travelers who prioritize snorkeling and a quieter environment. For first-time visitors to Punta Cana, Saona Island is the more iconic choice. For experienced travelers or dedicated snorkelers, Catalina Island offers a different kind of experience worth considering.

Saona Island is only there if you go.

Most visitors see Saona Island in photos from other people's trips. The ones who book it call it the highlight of their entire Dominican Republic vacation. Spots fill fast — especially for hotel pickup slots in high season.
